The Granduchess Elizaveta Feodorovna (1864-1918) was the second daughter of the Granduke Louis IV Assia-Darmstadt and of princess Alice of Great Britain. Nephew of Queen Victoria and older sister of the last Empress of Russia, Elizaveta married in 1884 with the Granduke Sergej Romanov. From 1899 to 1900 he was a member of the committee of the MOLCH, presided by her husband, where Troubetzkoy exhibited his artworks from 1898. After the murder of her husband in 1905, the granduchess took religious vows. In 1918 she was killed by a group of Bolsheviks and became a martyr of the Russian Orthodox church in 1992. The present plaster is dated around 1898, probably the same date as the one in marble, is kept at the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg. At the Museo del Paesaggio there is a cast in plaster of the same subject signed: Paul Troubetzkoy – Moscow (inv. T n. 245). Of Elizaveta Feodorovna there is an oil on canvas portrait signed by Paul Troubetzkoy which is kept at the Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow.
