Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

The 2nd of August 1899, Troubetzkoy sent a letter to Tostoy, asking if he could pose for a sculpture whilst riding a horse. The bronze, which derived by the present plaster, signed and dated Moscow 1899, is today conserved at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. It was exhibited at the Mir Iskusstva of 1899(Mir Iskusstva, 1899, n. 16-17, pp. 70-71, ripr. p. 206), triggering contrasting opinions among critics. Troubetzkoy completed numerous replicas in bronze depicting the same subject, which were then acquired by numerous Russian museums and galleries. In Milan is conserved at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna another bronze (signed and dated Paul Troubetzkoy 1899 – 1901). The artist portrayed the sunject once more during the summer of 1910 in Jasnaja Poljana. The replicas in bronze, which are dated between 1910 and 1916, are kept in American galleries and museums.
