Old man at Pio Albergo Trivulzio (Vecchio al Pio Albergo Trivulzio)
The present plaster is one of Troubetzkoy’s initial works, just after the artist had moved to Milan. The plaster could be dated around 1886 and 1887. It is not a coincidence that Troubetzkoy used as model one of the elderly living at the Pio Albergo Trivulzio, a reputable care home in Milan. After all, sculptors and painters of the calibre of Angelo Morbelli, Emilio Quadrelli and Ernesto Bazzaro, which undoubtedly influenced Troubetzkoy’s style, also used the Pio Albergo Trivulzio’s location as inspiration for works on elderly subjects.
